A chilly but clear sunny day and I am out working in the fields harvesting olives.
This year the harvest is sparse, the cold snap last spring, combined with a very dry and hot summer, has led to few fruit. The situation is especially bad here in Gubbio, one frantoio (olive mill) has not even opened, farmers who usually have plenty of oil for sale this year are keeping their precious liquid for home consumption. Here at Bellaugello, we too have few olives, we have not even bothered to put nets under many of the trees, instead scaling the ancient trunks, climbing high into branches and popping the few fruit into buckets. The work is time consuming and for lesser reward.
