Gubbio is already preparing for the upcoming annual Festa dei Ceri or Race of the Candles held on 15th. May. Last Sunday the Ceri were brought down to the town from the church of San Ubaldo which sits atop the hill behind Gubbio, a procession that kicks off the weeks of celebration which culminate on 15th. May in the Piazza Grande and the subsequent race round the medieval town centre and thence back up the hill. Coloured banners supporting the three saints hang from balconies and upper windows of the houses and palazzi in Gubbio and environs, the town is in colourful mood.
A quick trip last night to to a local enoteca secured us a couple of bottles of Montefalco Rosso from the cantina of Adanti. This is a good fine Umbrian wine from a mixture of Sangiovese and Sagrantino grapes grown in the hills surrounding the pretty town of Montefalco just south of Perugia. Adanti produce good quality reliable Umbrian wines and last night a couple of bottles were opened and consumed on the terrace here at Bellaugello Gay Guesthouse, yes there is a festive mood in the air.
