Yesterday was the first day that we were concerned with the Icelandic Volcano ash that so easily stops air travel.  A couple of guys are having to leave Bellaugello Gay guest house this morning flying back from Perugia to Stanstead London UK.

Fortunately the ash cloud seems to have dissapated this morning, although it had only affected northern airports, and as yesterday Perugia Airport remains open.  Indeed throughout the ash cloud crisis Perugia Airport has remained open.

It led us to ask just how many flights are there airborne over Europe at any one moment in time and thus how many people are airborne.  Searching the net we came up with unlikely figures ranging from 7.500.000 to 265,000 It certainly seemed to us like a lot of folk simply hanging about up there…
