I asked advice and as usual received differing answers, however yesterday I set to and harvested the almonds from the tree I planted last year in the garden here at Bellaugello Gay Guest House.
Two differing opinions: 1 when the outer soft shell splits then the almonds are ready to be gathered. 2 you harvest almonds when they have fallen to the ground.
Well, one or two had fallen to the ground, the majority were still on the tree and the soft shells were split, so I picked and gathered. This morning I spent a pleasant hour removing the nuts from the soft outer casing, now what to do with them? leave them somewhere cool and dark to dry, put them in the sun, or store them? Who knows, anyway I am so thrilled to have had my first almond harvest here in Umbria. There may not be sufficient nuts to see me through the year but there will certainly be enough to put on the table for guests at our Christmas Houseparty..
