Eugene

An American living in Florence.
We met only once at a lunch in Umbria, but his zest for life, his smile, and love of his adopted country came over very strongly, he was a man you could not help but to like nor forget, his posts on Facebook memorable.
Infectious in his enthusiasm for everything, deeply curious, with a dry sense of humour and great affability he had many many friends, and a partner, gentle, thoughtful, and older Antonio.
Eugene and Antonio have been together well over twenty years, when yesterday at home at his desk Eugene complained of not feeling well, and subsequently collapsed, a heart attack. The paramedics were not able to revive him.
Like all Eugene’s friends I am in shock. His wish is to be cremated but in italy this requires the consent of the next of kin, in Eugene’s case his twin sister who lives in New York. Despite them both having lived in Italy for some decades and been partners in every sense of the word for over 32 years, Antonio (he is Italian) has no rights or say. Fortunately for them relations with Eugene’s sister are excellent, his wishes will be respected, but not many families are so fortunate or so united, the law here in Italy needs to change now!
